Awards Ceremony

SATURDAY, JUNE 20 AT 4 PM / McCORD MUSEUM

Who will take home the Rigoberta Menchu and Teueikan awards and earn a statuette by Mattiusi Iyaituk? A jury presided by Richard Brouillette (who directed L'encerclement – La démocratie dans les rets du néolibéralisme), made up of Tracey Deer, Carlos Ferrand, Marlene Millar, Federico Hidalgo et Lesvia Vela, will face the challenging task of choosing among the best. Together they will also present the Short Subject and Photo Direction awards.

Mainfilm awards a Young Hope prize while the journal Séquences awards the prize for Best Documentary. The Dr Bernard Chagnan Assiniwi award is bestowed by the author's estate, in association with the festival.

Civic Ceremony for National Aboriginal Peoples’ Day

This annual ceremony has taken place since 1996, in the presence of dignitaries from different levels of government and First Nations leaders.
The drum salutes the sun at its summer solstice; let us all rejoice!

The embers of the June 21 fire will be officially handed over to the organizers of la Fête nationale du Québec. The warmth of friendship among peoples announces a glorious summer.

And for the pure pleasure of continuing the conversation, three introductory classes in Mohawk, Abenaki and Inuktitut.

FRIDAY, JUNE 19 at 5 pm
Introductory Mohawk language class. With Sedalia Fazio, a Mohawk from the Kahnawake community, traditional artist and spiritual leader.

SATURDAY, JUNE 20 at 3 pm
Introductory Abenaki language class. With Philippe Charland, Ph.D., associate researcher with UQAM History department – Historical geography and Aboriginal Toponymy.

SUNDAY, JUNE 21 at 3 pm
Introductory Inuktitut language class. With Lydia Etok, an Inuk from Kangiqsualujjuaq, Nunavik, administrative assistant with Makivik Corporation.
